're awaiting dueling speeches today from republican presidential nominee mitt romney and president obama. both candidates campaigning across the battleground state of virginia. governor romney in springfield, mr. obama in virginia beach. it is the third time in a week they are both hitting the same stage. shane deapril is the editor of campaigns and elections magazine. democrats are pretty confident about virginia this time. should they be, shane? >> we've seen some dueling polls out of virginia. there are some that show the president with a clear lead. some show the contest quite a bit tighter. but i think what you're seeing with amount of time both campaigns are spending in virginia it is such a key state when it comes to the electoral college calculation for both campaigns. essentially in my sort of electoral college predictor i have president obama at 237 electoral votes right now. so that means the three really big swing states, ohio, virginia, and florida, they could be really killers for mitt romney if he can't find a way to wrestle two of those away from president obama. if the preside

a handful of states ohio and florida being the most important governor romney plus win in both places that's why today's polling news is causing controversy. talking points has said from the very beginning that the debates this year will be the deciding factor one week from tonight in denver, colorado, the president will meet the governor at :00 p.m. eastern time. no question and all the polls show this that most americans are not happy with president obama's leadership, especially on the economy. many of the folks don't trust mitt romney. however, if the governor can do what ronald reagan did in 1980, that is keep the incumbent president on the defense during the debates, then the polls will surely change. that's not an easy thing to do because the debate formats allow the candidates to say pretty much whatever they want to sacht the moderator next week jim lair is not going to control obama or romney. he will ask a question and keep quiet. that's not a knock on will he leher. any interruptions are deemed inappropriate. the out of touch with the folks. the president has spent hundreds of

journalists might say about it. that ad moves people and has an impact. i have seen both obama and romney suddenly tweak or change or drop language called out by fact checkers. ultimately, there was a decision there that it does not mean that much to us if we fix this. we will get less grief if we treat it a bit or change it on the margins, but the key things that move voters, such as, he apologizes for america or obama with that ridiculous thing about savings from the wars, and in the same breath he criticizes george w. bush for running wars on a credit card. he will say those on this one sentence after another without any sense he is contradicting himself. there is pulling there that says that is an effective line and moves voters. it does not matter what the actual facts are. that is when -- >> in that statement, he also said, fact checkers come to this with their own sense of thoughts and ideas and backgrounds. he is trying to redefine what a fact is. he is saying, there are no objective facts. it is to somebody else's opinion about what we are saying. it is kind of like redefining ap

't think the situation is that dire yet. they do acknowledge both inside the campaign and outside that they are losing and the main reason that the republicans in ohio point to is that romney doesn't really have a cohesive message and said this is why you should throw barack obama out and install me as president. the key issue is the bailout of chrysler and general motors that the president pushed through. they say romney hasn't been able to come up with a consistent answer to this and the obama campaign has been mmering on this. one republican i talked to put it very bluntly, a senior republican in ohio said that obama's advantage on the auto bailout is quote a kick in the balls for the romney campaign. you can't say it, so i will, but that's sort of a consist ebt criticism about the campaign that they haven't been able to develop a message about that. >> i got to hear you say it. that's good enough for me, peter. one thing that's interesting to me, from your reporting and i i know you spent a lot of time out in the field, that romney has a good ground game in ohio. knocking o
